Whenever you hear the word ‘Boracay’, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind?
For me, it's the water. Since it’s an island, I always think about the beautiful beaches there. I’ve always pictured Boracay as a place where there are lots of coconut trees, shells all over the shore, waves crashing into those big rocks around the island, and surrounded by different types of people all over the world. Whenever the opportunity of experiencing Boracay arises, I‘ve always turned it down because it’s either I don’t want to get way too tan or I felt like it’s not the right time for me to go. People often tell me I’m crazy for not going because according to them, Boracay is a paradise. A place where you can just relax all day, easily forget about your worries and troubles, and enjoy the nightlife.
Last June, I finally had the chance to experience one of the world’s top destination for relaxation according to Wikipedia. Going to Boracay was very unexpected to be honest, and it felt like it happened so fast that I still can't believe I went there. So here’s what happened... My cousins’ family decided to have a vacation in Boracay for a few days before the summer ends. When they've invited me, I felt like I wanted to go for that moment and as the time passed by, I started feeling lazy about it, like, “meh maybe next time”. But my kuya (my older cousin) still insisted I go with them because one our Balikbayan friend (Hi mare! if you’re reading this) was going to Boracay, too, so maybe we can meet up with her and hangout. So I’ve decided to go and tell my mother about it, and she was okay with it. I was happy and nervous at the same time because I was going to have many of my firsts. Like my first airplane ride, first time to go to Boracay, first time to go somewhere far away without my parents, first time to go with my cousins’ family vacation, and first time to experience things alone. Well I’m not totally alone, but I hope you know what I mean. *laughs*
Back and forth, we had delayed flights. It was very annoying, but thankfully I was with my cousins so I was well-entertained and never felt bored. Riding the airplane was okay and honestly, I enjoyed it. I just noticed that it gave me a weird feeling in my stomach whenever we took off, but it was manageable. The view from above was amazing, though it was night time so I was not able to see a lot, but the darkness and lights altogether was breathtaking. The journey going to Boracay was so tiring yet fun. I noticed that the island has so many establishments all over, and it felt crowded for some reason. Food was everywhere. There were so many kinds of cuisines available and it was a little bit difficult to choose which one to try. As I’ve expected, there were so many foreigners from all over the world. It was jam-packed with people, especially at night when it's time for happy hour. Everyone was enjoying the nights away and lots of entertainment were present, like fire dancers, bands playing songs, and other recreational activities. It was fun to watch everyone having a good time and the time of their lives. I even got to witness a proposal in the middle of the crowd, which was insane but in the good way. As a kind of shopaholic (well not really *winks*), I really enjoyed wandering around the night market and see what they sell. I wanted to buy those cute home decors made of shells but I felt afraid that it might get broken during my travel back home so I decided to let it go. Everything was so expensive! I didn’t have any choice that time but I still can’t get over the fact that I paid 200 pesos for buko juice. Crazy right? But hey, it is from Boracay so maybe it was worth it but still way too expensive, for me at least. One of my top priorities was to get a henna tattoo on my hand because it looks so cool and I’m glad I got it ticked out of my list. The guy who’ve done it for me was so good because he didn’t even have a pattern or guide that time. I guess since many people ask for it, he already memorized them. Also, I love how our temporary home was just a few steps away from the beach and a Starbucks. Every morning and night that I was there, I dosed myself with caffeine. I enjoyed how this specific barista greeted me with “Hi Giselle, one grande non-fat Caramel Macchiato?" every time he saw me and it gets me all the time. Sometimes it still makes me laugh thinking about it because it was like I only went to Boracay for the Starbucks coffee. *laughs*
All in all, my experience was amazing. The sand felt smooth at my feet when I walked barefoot on the seashore. The wind was so relaxing that I felt like I was being rocked to sleep. The sun's rays felt warm and energizing on my skin. The ambiance was relaxing and refreshing. Lastly, the crowd was entertaining because everyone was so nice and friendly. It was definitely really satisfying to experience Boracay and to be perfectly honest, it made me crave for the beaches and nature even more. I feel like I’m slowly becoming a beach bum, plus I felt like I was bitten by a travel bug during the trip. I would definitely go back to Boracay and I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to have a good time, break from reality and adores beaches so much.
Shoutout to my tito, tita, and cousins for accommodating me during their family trip. Thank you so much for everything, especially for making me feel that I'm part of your family. You guys are the best!
Have you been to Boracay? If yes, what do you miss the most? If no, what are you looking forward to?
For me, I’m already missing sitting near the beach with my coffee while enjoying the weather and some me time. How about you?
